URGENT: Massive Canned Tuna Recall 2025 – Costco, Walmart & Trader Joe’s Affected!
FDA Issues Recall for Canned Tuna Due to Deadly Botulism Risk
In February 2025, Tri-Union Seafoods initiated a nationwide recall of specific canned tuna products due to a defect in the pull-tab lids. This defect could compromise the seal, potentially leading to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the deadly bacterium responsible for botulism—a rare but potentially fatal illness.
Brands and Retailers Affected
The recall affects canned tuna sold under the following brands:
- Genova
- Van Camp's
- H-E-B
- Trader Joe's
These products were distributed at major retailers, including:
- Costco
- Trader Joe's
- Walmart
- H-E-B
- Harris Teeter
- Publix
- Kroger
- Safeway
The affected products were sold in multiple states, including California, Texas, Florida, and New York.
How to Identify Recalled Canned Tuna
Consumers should check their canned tuna for specific lot numbers and expiration dates printed on the bottom of the cans. A full list of recalled products, UPC codes, and affected batches can be found on the FDA's official website.
Severe Health Risks – Do Not Consume!
The FDA warns that consuming the contaminated tuna can cause botulism, which may lead to:
- Muscle paralysis
- Difficulty breathing
- Potentially fatal complications
Even if the tuna looks or smells fine, it should NOT be eaten.
What You Should Do Immediately
If you have purchased any of the recalled canned tuna:
- Do NOT eat it! Even if it appears normal.
- Dispose of the product properly or return it to the retailer for a full refund.
